Ochteridae

Overview

The velvety shore bugs bear a superficial physical resemblance to the Saldidae, and indeed behave in a similar manner and occupy a similar habitat.

As their common name suggests the shore bugs inhabit areas such as sandbanks and mudflats close to quiet water bodies. Nymphs have been reported as attaching grains of sand to their back to aid in camouflage and to construct small cells of sand during moulting.

Distribution

Ochterids are found throughout Australia with the 11 described species placed in the the genera Ochterus (9 spp.) and Megochterus (2 spp.).
