Linognathus parasitises ruminants and canids, and the species present in Australia are all parasites of domestic mammals: L . pedalis and L . ovillus on sheep, L . vituli on cattle, L . stenopsis on goats and L . setosus on dogs, including the dingo. Solenopotes capillatus occurs on cattle.


Head relatively small; mouth-parts developed into an unjointed more or less pointed beak, or rounded anteriorly, without mandibles. Head without eyes or ocular points. Head and thorax with only a few typical setae, abdomen without scales. Abdomen without distinct paratergites; fore coxae widely separated from each other; on ungulates and carnivores.
