Nomenclature

  • Cryptothrips Uzel, 1895: 228. Type species Cryptothrips lata Uzel

Diversity

Eleven species are listed in this genus. However, four of these are based on specimens that are presumed to be lost. and two are unrelated members of the Phlaeothripinae that cannot at present be placed to genus.

Distribution

Holarctic, including northern Europe and North America as far south as California.

Biology

Feeding on fungal spores, and usually found in leaf litter.

Relationships

Tribe Pygothripini, subtribe Pygothripina.

The very long and broad maxillary stylets suggest a relationship to Pygothrips and Priesneriana.
